Essential Student Information

ASSIGNMENTS:

It is important that SATS students be proficient in submitting assignments and taking tests on MySats. Please log in and familiarize yourselves with the resources on the Home page of MySats (http://www.satsonline.org/satsecampus/), especially relating to submitting assignments. Note that assignment file names should not contain special characters like + or &.

FREE DEMO COURSE:

To help you there is a free, self-guided demonstration course on how to use MySats effectively for which all students should enrol themselves. To do so, follow the link to the MySats Demonstration Course on the Home page under Courses > General. The course is very short (less than one hour to complete) and helpful, especially as you are preparing to take tests or exams online. There are no marks or credits for the course.

GENERAL FORUM:

Students are encouraged to subscribe to the General Forum on the Home page. (You should change your forum subscription settings in your profile to reduce your e-mails to one message per day. Instructions for doing so are given in the Technical Helps section on the Home page.)

TESTS:

Regarding tests: If, for any reason, you lose your connection to MySats whilst taking a test you should simply return to the test and continue with it — as long as the time limit has not been exceeded.

Even if you have been a long-time student, visit the Demonstration Course to check your procedures and streamline your submissions.

Warning Letter to Students

Note for students:

In the past week, we have dealt with four disciplinary actions, something that one would not expect within the Christian environment. We want to maintain a high academic standard with complete integrity. Therefore, we urge you as fellow Christians to ensure that you adhere to the rules within the student handbook and the guidelines within the introduction to each course.

Plagiarism is when you use a source without referencing the resource, as prescribed in the handbook and in the prescribed book, Academic Writing and Theological Research (Smith 2008). Direct quotations also always require quote marks (‘like this’).

Cheating is when you

  • write from another student’s assignments or help another student by allowing another student to write from your assignments; supply us with false information, giving the impression that you were ‘speaking’ the truth; or
  • use your forbidden materials during a quiz or exam.

False information is when you

  • take an exam that requires an invigilator, while he or she is not present. The invigilator should be present while you are taking the exam;
  • claim that you have done something on MySATS at a given time, when in reality you did not. (We can investigate the MySats log files to determine whether or not your claim is true.)

All these aspects are seen as a serious breach of the values that we hold dear. Depending on the severity of the case, any violation constitutes grounds for one of four kinds of disciplinary action at SATS:
1. failing the assignment,
2. failing the course,
3. suspension of studies, or
4. expulsion from SATS.

We request that all facilitators, tutors, and markers as well as students take this as a very serious warning.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Willem Semmelink
Head of the Undergraduate School

Assignment & Exam Due Dates

Please make efficient time to hand in assignments. As you all know from Term 1, which started the 1st of February 2013 there will be no resubmissions. When you leave the assignment to the last minute and you experience technical problems and you are only able to upload it the day after the assignment deadline you will loose 10% per day to a maximum of 5 days.

Please plan ahead and submit ahead of due dates.

General Inquiries

  1. All admin inquiries must be send to Lewende Woord Correspondence Administrators. Please send all requests via email.
  2. Any grading inquiries must be send to Lewende Woord Correspondence Administrators.
  3. Contact Lewende Woord Correspondence Administrators with any problems uploading assignments .
  4. All academic inquiries please contact the facilitator on MySats.
  • All course related communications require the course code plus assignment number if relevant, term number, as well as the facilitator’s name & surname.
  • For example: THE 1122, Term 4, Assignments 3-5, Bert Barnes. We have different partnerships and we do not want to have to go through the lists of students to determine who this student’s facilitator is;
  • Students need to communicate directly with the facilitator and/or tutor. The facilitator will determine whether the communication should be escalated to a senior Academic.

MySats Home Page Updates

All students are requested to keep abreast of changes to the resources on their MySats Home page, which are always announced on the General Forum.

BTh students should read the pages listed under the headingTechnical Helps, especially the one containing the latest instructions for Submitting assignments.

Note that no late submissions are allowed (except for medical reasons or a death in your family, in which case approval from the registrar is required).
